36 days - 4

Today I went for cubism as a fairly straightforward interpretation of the number 4.

"Cubism was a revolutionary new approach to representing reality invented in around 1907–08 by artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. They brought different views of subjects (usually objects or figures) together in the same picture, resulting in paintings that appear fragmented and abstracted"

Ideally, it would have been a nice extension to make a physical 3D 4 for this one and then photograph it from a number of angles to create a cubist composition via photoshop. However, with time squeezed I decided to instead sketch out a version of a similar principle. I used images of a 4 found on google and some imagination to create a collection of 4s that are somewhat speculatively drawn from a range of angles, designed to confuse and attract the viewer and still look like a blocky 4 holistically. The negative space had to be dropped to make give more pure shapes that collide and bordered each other in a traditionally cubist style. I also paid close attention to the application of oil paint and shading created in cubist pieces and imaged what I could create digitally.

From the quick sketches, one clear winner stood out due to its resemblance of the number 4 whilst being dimensionally confusing and solidly cubist.

I vectorised my favourite sketch and colour picked some colours from Albert Gleizes 1914 ‘Arbre et fleuve’ painting. Then it was time to apply some shading and make the form as similar to a cubist painting as possible via digital means.
