36 days - 3

I had always had 3 in mind for a fairly simple concept that explored a new medium of 3D type. Even though I can mock up some fairly 3D looking imagery on photoshop the world of genuine 3D typography in which the viewer can see the object from various angles in a 3D plane is outside of my skill set. For this reason, I collaborated with peer Oliver Anglin who has the expertise to produce such a form in 3D software blender. I first looked at some inspiration from other artists but a lot of the work that's out there at the moment appeared to be quite tubular and evenly weighted which doesn't really correspond with my style and Olly suggested this was because it's easier to construct. I wanted to create something a bit more dynamic and semi calligraphic. We also decided that something in which there is a depth of field were elements arent necessarily lined up on a 2D plane that just happens to be three dimensional but instead an anamorphic design that was only legible as a 3 from a certain angle would be a preference. We then decide that the viewpoint should not be fixed and should interact with the highly sculptural form in some way. There's no point in having a physically 3D object if it cant be viewed as such via a video.

Here is some stills from moving 4 by Henris Kas that appeared to be made out of a virtual rubber-type material that fell over in the video. This helped us decide we needed consideration for the material. We eventually settled on a sort of tooth enamel/ceramic render as it's not as overused as types of metal or glass but has strong sculptural properties. Also the final sketch slightly resembled a tooth or a tusk.

The sketching phase was my main contribution before I gave the idea to Olly to work up into a 3D under my guidance. I wanted to create a form that almost wrapped around an invisible structure which luckily is a feature within blender allowing a central structure than can then be sculpted around via a 3D pen tool.

We then created a camera path that started on the intended viewing angle for the three, looped underneath and around it and then returned to said viewing angle to make for a perfect Instagram loop. My first video of the series! Promoting a good response despite the fairly late submissions time due to the logo waiting period for a decent quality render.
