Type for the race of the future
Collaboration with fashion communication student to create typography for a publication that offers a speculative showcase of a future superhuman race.

·      Discuss gender and its relationship with letterforms to mirror the 'super futuristic and post-apocalyptic' figures without binary gender that feature within the publication.
·      Envisage future and speculate on future typography through ideas informed by others utopian visions of the future.
·      You can explore generative or animated type forms where appropriate to the context.

As this brief was still very much being formulated at the time of the 10 brief submissions inevitably it has completely changed. The project involves working on a typeface for 3rd-year fashion communication student Joe Harris. I worked with Joe last year outside of my submissions so we know its a good working relationship and I really admire his work ethic and editorial eye. Within this particular orientation, he will take on a creative direction, editorial and copywriting capacity for the publication. I shall be in charge of type design and we shall have some collaborative deliberation over typesetting. Because this is for his context of practice hand in the new studio deadline is the 2nd of January! So realistically it needs to be near enough sorted by Christmas day and then we will have some time to deliberate before he attempts to print between the 3rd and the 7th. This is quite a snappy turnaround due to Joe being busy with publication content work until the rebrief and me finishing context of practice this week. Hopefully, this quick turn around and succinct client/collaboration negotiation will mimic a realistic working environment nicely.

Brief

Type Design for 'Divine Manifestation' - a publication and accompanying video documenting an ancient Hindu meditation ritual, designed to help the user reach 3 manifestations of higher being.

Background/Considerations

Based on the ancient Hindu text 'Sanskrit', Kundalili yoga, tantra and guided meditation as vessels to reach a higher being. The publication will be split down into chapters: 'practitioner', 'rage', 'wisdom', and 'serenity'.

Context:
  • Consider a reference to Hindu scripts and calligraphic writing styles whilst maintaining modernity and culturally appropriate outcomes.
  • Avoid 'pastiche' wherever possible
  • Create forms devoid of gender bias as appropriate to Hindu deities
  • Consider the end-user - potential for the publication to eventually be sold in for example 'Village books' - target audience 18-35-year-olds with an interest in spirituality and the arts.

Mandatory Requirements
Deliverables

Ongoing and critical evaluation via:
·       Regular blog posts documenting progress and providing critical reflection (All blog posts should be organised and labelled as outlined in the briefing and e-studio.)
·       A minimum of 6 design boards documenting and reflecting upon the project in a concise and professional manner.

  • Two typefaces, one decorative one more legible, designed for use throughout publication or video
  • One publication or video created in collaboration
  • One self-orchestrated specimen in reference to the outcomes but with the sole focus of the type produced
