Brief 7 Initial research

Joe sent me an image from one of his mood boards alongside the brief. The need for a synergy between the Sanskrit script origins and Latin outcomes is apparent and the balance of traditional techniques and modern or almost futuristic final forms. He's prioritising the heading text anyway and I have been told that the more decorative headings don't necessarily have to be provided in both upper and lower case, a point that's apparent from this board. Heading text is circled in green and body in pink as an indicator of the sort of cohesion required.

This is that image circled for header text. 'PARIS IS MELTING' a piece of 2018 album artwork by Jacob Wise for the Whities label. In-person Joe was also very adamant about the cursive and curved fluidity of the type forms, so it makes sense for him to single out this one as a key reference. Legibility is less of a concern of course with the heading text and highly decorative figures are encouraged.

And then the body text is written out like this with serif Latin translations.

When looking into modern interpretations of Sanskrit, there are a few interpretations readily available online with the key defining element appearing to be the interaction between a static horizontal line lining all forms and the fluidity of the cursive forms beneath. The one below, top is provided by Nepali Fonts and Designs on facebook so, therefore, offers a non-western origin contemporary interpretation of the style I should be going for. However, alternatively, the line can be seen broken up more regularly and the forms can be akin to western blackletter but of course, the fluidity is important for this exact application. The influence of the hand should probably be visible throughout this heading text.

Entercourse Of The New Age is another contemporary practicioner alongside Jacob Wise and Nepali fonts and designs that I feel is applicable to the style. I believe he is also possibly featured on Joe's mood board with a similar design to the one bellow. Maintaining certain rules such as that razor-sharp top bar from EotNA is going to be important for my designs.
