CoP exemplary graphic design articles

In today's session, we went over a series of articles to get a general grip of how research can be packaged. This gave an understanding of the do's and don't of information presentation from a very general standpoint. I need to do more of this analysis for more relevant texts.

Graphic Design for the Real World? by Katrin Bichler & Sofie Beier

What is the main argument of the article?
"it is critical that visual are aware that apart from communicating a clients' message or voicing their own agenda, they can create design that is a service to the reader."
The designer should always have the end-user in mind.

What is the main theoretical framework for the article?
Papenek "Design for the Real World"

What types of design do they critique?
Advertising campaign design, with reference to informative/persuasive techniques.

What might you as a designer take from this?

The consideration that a designers purpose is not to pass on their own agenda, but to provide a service to the user.

The Graphic Thing Ambiguity, Dysfunction, and Excess in Designed Objects - Phil Jones

What is thingness as it relates to graphic design?
Things are our subjective perception of the meaning of reality, rather than as entities that exist

independently of human comprehension. So in relation to graphic design the meaning we attribute to say a typeface or specific use of image is an example of thingness.

What is the main argument? What can graphic designers take from the research?
How designers can use the subjects understanding to things to help communicate or draw attention.

Can you identify a coherent theoretical framework in the article?
No, this body of research draws on too many areas of research to have a concrete and coherent theoretical framework.

The future of print design relies on interaction - Marco Neves

How does this research article differ from the previous two?
Marco uses a body of practical work instead of referencing the work of others throughout.

What is the main aim or argument of the research?
Graphic design has become enslaved to digital technologies, leading to the demise of print-based media. This project offers some level of solution to this issue however perhaps there is overcompensation for this as print media is still contextually known and used.

Does the author utilise a theoretical framework?
No
