36 days of type - 2

Today two was devoted to a duality and duality art. It was an interesting challenge to explore how many dualities I could encompass within one quick letter design.

Within art specifically, dualities have been used in everything from renaissance painting through to yin and yang. 

South Korean painter Kyung Sunghyun creates a duality between emotions and energy within a figure or composition, his paintings are designed to both represent a straight forward duality from a distance and an added layer of complexity and detail when the viewer moves close to the piece, creating layers of meaning. The sketchy line qualities as if the figures are moving also creates a powerful merger of the two distinctive dualities as if creating motion blur between two energies that would not be perceivable by the human eye. 

This Renaissance piece Dürer’s Apocalypse displays a duality between heaven and hell, imagining a hierarchy at the time of an apocalypse. Using 3 panels Albert Dürer images the disconnect between the two disparate ideas of existence.

With these ideas in mind, I decided to express a simplistic duality between uniformity and decorative forms of type using 8x8 grided square I tried to experiment with different divides of the square. 

 Context:
"2 is for Duality - an instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or aspects of something. Here the contrast of linear form in san serif type and lateral, decorative forms. Plus some bait 3D bits are thrown in to create a dimensional duality."
